Tour Description

Don't have time for a full day tour but want to learn more about the Battle of Okinawa? See some of the off the beaten track highlights of the Battle of Okinawa with this four-and-a-half-hour historical tour. We will start at Kakazu Takadai Ridge in Ginowan City, one of the first major engagements in the Battle. After touring the site and discussing why the Battle became so fierce at this point, we will move to the Okinawa Army Hospital, Haebaru Bunker #20. Here we will be able to enter a man-made tunnel created by the Japanese military and Okinawan civilians, which was once used as a military hospital. Our final stop for the day will be at the Himeyuri Monument and Peace Museum in Itoman, to learn about the role of young schoolgirls forced to be nurses during the Battle. ** Entry into the Haebaru Bunker #20 is by appointment only and is closed on Wednesdays. If we are unable to get an appointment, we will change our location to a different war related site. We will walk up stairs and on uneven walking surfaces. Some stops will include slightly longer distances at a leisurely pace (less than a mile/1.6 km) or extended periods of standing (up to an hour).
